From a distance, it almost looks as if the zebras are climbing up out of the earth itself. In reality, they are stepping gracefully from a waterhole at first light, their bodies backlit by the rising sun.
This photograph was taken in the heart of Nxai Pan, Botswana - a place where vast open plains meet skies that seem to stretch forever. In the stillness of early morning, the only sounds were the gentle splashes of hooves in the shallow water and the occasional snort of a zebra shaking off the cool night air.
The light at this hour is fleeting - a narrow window when the sun sits low, casting warm, honeyed tones across the land. The pale pink clouds drifting overhead added a softness that contrasted with the bold stripes of the zebras.
Nxai Pan Sunrise captures a rare alignment of movement, light, and colour. It’s a celebration of the quiet magic that exists in the in-between moments before the heat of the day, before the landscape shifts into harsher tones, when the wild seems to hold its breath.
Shot on Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM.
