The Geisha Who Turned Tears into Tough Love in 1874

This scene looks like heartbreak — a silent young man, a geisha wiping her tears — but the 1875 news print behind it tells a very different story. What unfolds here isn’t a breakup; it’s tough love in the early Meiji era.

The print recounts the story of Umekichi, a celebrated geisha from Akasaka’s Tameike district. She was admired not just for her beauty, but for her sincerity, described by the news writer as ‘a lotus blooming unstained in muddy water’. Her companion, Nakajima Seibi, born to a samurai family, had the rare gift of mastering multiple Western languages — English, French, German, Russian — yet squandered his talent in drink and pleasure, deeply worrying his parents.

When Umekichi learned of their despair, she made a painful decision. Setting aside her own feelings, she urged Seibi:
‘Don’t waste your life on me. You can become a scholar. Go — study.’

The objects painted around them reflect the choice before him:
• a sake bottle and cup, symbols of indulgence
• a patterned teacup, a quieter emblem of discipline and clarity

These small details mark the exact moment when distraction gives way to renewal.

And astonishingly, Seibi listened. He returned to study, and Umekichi even used her own earnings to buy the lamp oil that kept him reading at night.

Why did this story make the news?
In the 1870s, Akasaka’s geisha were not only entertainers. They interacted with politicians, writers, and thinkers, and shinbun nishiki-e often portrayed them as moral voices in a rapidly changing society. Through Umekichi, the print offered a lesson: virtue can appear in unlikely places, and true success comes not through pleasure, but through perseverance.

And that final question lingers even now:
