Fishing Lure Making | Part 1, Flat Sided Crankbait, Free Downloadable Template

Inspired by Pro Angler, Ott DeFoe, I make these Flat Sided Crankbaits. It is designed with front center of gravity and profile that allows swimming near bottom while hitting rocks and woods, to attract bites. Thin and flat sided Balsa wood gives it natural tighter wiggling action.

I have created 2 versions, “Fast Floating” (7g or 0.25oz) and “Slow Floating” (10.5g or 0.37oz). Fast Floating when I am fishing in shallow water with heavy cover of rocks. Higher buoyancy to get out of snag when pausing retrieve. Slow Floating when I need to cast further and getting to the bottom strike zone quickly.

During prototype testing, I was truly surprised by the effectiveness. 3 hits within minutes from shore on very pressured fishing ground, and without issue with snagging. Both versions work very well, I do notice that Slow Floating is more effective during low light condition, the knocks on the bottom are harder and it gives more time for the fish to react when retrieve pauses.

I painted the lure in 2 colors: “Pumpkin Seed” and “Hot Copper Green Shad”. The colors work well but do apply any color that suits your fishing condition.
