A talk by Professor Puay-peng Ho, and moderated by Kevin Lam (ACM senior curator of Chinese Art), originally held at the ACM Ngee Ann Auditorium on 13 September 2024.
The pagoda is a unique architectural form that has existed in China since the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 AD). Its form and meaning have undergone many changes over the last two millennia. In ancient urban or natural landscapes, pagodas were conspicuous man-made structures that served as attractive landmarks; to millions of Buddhist devotees, they also had an important function as markers of faith.
This talk explores the rich history of pagodas as spiritual and cultural symbols in China. The speaker will also discuss how the pagoda form developed from the Indian stupa, and how it was transmitted and transformed in Japan from the 3rd to 18th century.
This lecture is organised in conjunction with the special exhibition Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai to San Francisco.
