Peter N Godino was a tail-gunner on a B-24 when in July of 1944 his plane broke in half over Austria, spinning around at 18,000 feet, and reaching back from his tight turret to find his parachute still on its hook behind him, and able to put on one hook before being sucked out of the tail. He then lost his boots after being sucked off, and was badly injured on his hands and legs by the flac and went the whole way down sideways. He somehow landed safely in Austria, and survived about a year in a few different POW camps, marching through Germany, and after being rescued followed the Russian army into Berlin after they liberated his camp on May 1st, 1945.
Pete is a hero, and I am proud to call him my father in law, and so happy he found that parachute on that hook behind him, and my wife, and kids are all here because of that.
At the 34:00 mark you can hear the narrator Frank Boring ask Peter about his most dangerous battle, and he responds that his plane broke in half, and they didn't know why, and not knowing what happened to Peter, Frank the narrator asks, "How did you land?", and Pete responds, "We didn't".
The intensity of the interview cranks up a few notches from there. He spoke to Peter for 1 hour, 20 minutes in all, and Pete's memory is amazing.
