The Department of Genetics presents the Gary D. Stormo Symposium on Computational Biology! This event celebrates Dr. Gary D. Stormo and his achievements as a pioneer in computational biology, as well as his legacy as an inspiring mentor and educator. His colleagues, collaborators, and former trainees will speak on Dr. Stormo’s accomplishments in computational biology, current developments in the field, and on the history of the Computational Biology Ph.D. program at Washington University in St. Louis.
About Mark Johnston:
Dr. Johnston is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he served as Chair from 2009-2019. He received is Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, after which he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. Dr. Johnston joined the faculty of the Department of Genetics at Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as interim chair from 2002 - 2006. He was President of the Genetics Society of America and Editor-in-Chief of GENETICS, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the US National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Johnston’s lab focused on understanding glucose sensing and signaling, and developing methods for functional genomics, particularly for the analysis
of transcription factor binding in the genome. His lab also played key roles in sequencing the yeast genome and the construction of the yeast gene knockout collection.
