The name Jalpaiguri came from the word “Jalpai “ meaning “Olive” which grew in the town and adjacent areas and were even visible in the 1900.Jalpaiguri is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the Jalpaiguri district as well as of the Jalpaiguri division of West Bengal, covering the jurisdiction of the five districts of North Bengal.
Jalpaiguri is famous for its traditional handicrafts especially cane and bamboo crafts. Other materials which you can carry back as souvenirs and gifts include wall hangings, jute and wooden artworks and other traditionally made jewellery.Jalpaiguri city is governed by Municipality and is situated in Jalpaiguri Urban Region. The total population of Jalpaiguri UA/Metropolitan region is 169,002. The male population of which is 85,218 while female population is 83,784.on the west bank of the Tista River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River.
