Chez Peugeot, l’appétit vient en mangeant. Après avoir modernisé son bas de gamme avec la 204 en 1965, avoir musclé son jeu dans les grandes berlines avec la 504 de 1968, et s’être offert un milieu de gamme à pas cher avec la 304 en 1969, la marque sochalienne n’allait pas s’arrêter en si bon chemin. Mais désormais, il fallait s’imposer aussi dans le haut de gamme. Dès la fin des années 60, Peugeot y songeait, et les premiers prototypes commencèrent à rouler en 1971 : ce projet donnera naissance à la Peugeot 604.
