High-energy photons can split water: This is called radiolysis. This produces ions and so-called free radicals. These are chemically very reactive compounds. Understanding the radiolysis of water is important for wastewater treatment, radiotherapy and space travel, among other things. Ihme and his team are now interested in the dynamics of this process in supercritical water (H2O) and heavy water (D2O). With a time resolution of less than a picosecond, they want to investigate the influence of radiolysis on the structure and dynamics of hydrogen bonds on nanometre length scales at the European XFEL's MID experimental station. These experiments will help to significantly expand our understanding of radiolysis.
