Deconstructing I'm A Loser - The Beatles (Isolated Tracks)

"I'm a Loser" was written by John Lennon in the summer of 1964. John said, "I would try to express what I felt about myself. I think it was Dylan who helped me realize that." Paul added in 1994, "We used to listen to a lot of country and western songs, and they were all about sadness and 'I lost my truck,' so it was quite acceptable to sing 'I'm a loser.' You really didn't think about it at the time; it was only later you'd think, 'God! That was pretty brave of John.' 'I'm a Loser' was pretty much John's song, and there may have been a dabble or two from me."

The song was brought into the studio on August 14, 1964, and was initially in contention for release as a single. However, that changed when I Feel Fine was introduced. The session lasted about three hours in total, with eight different takes recorded. The last take was deemed the best.

The basic track featured John on a 12-string guitar, possibly his Framus Hootenanny, George on his Gretsch Tennessean, Paul on his Hofner, and Ringo on drums. John and Paul harmonized live, with John also playing harmonica during the recording. The only overdubs needed were George adding more guitar licks and the solo, Ringo playing tambourine, and John and Paul double-tracking their vocals. After this, the song was complete.
