William Whitehead, was an English poet and playwright. Born in 1715 at Cambridge. At the age of 14 Whitehead was educated at Winchester College followed by Clare Hall at Cambridge, here he became a fellow in 1740. Being at Cambridge he published a number of poems, including a heroic epistle Ann Boleyn to Henry the Eighth (1743), and in 1745 he became tutor to Viscount Villiers, who was son of the earl of Jersey this made him to reside in London. Around this time he even read plays for the producer David Garrick, and his tragedy, The Roman Father was successfully produced by David Garrick in 1750. Then his Creusa, Queen of Athens (1754) was also praised. Further, In 1757 upon the death of Colley Cibber, Whitehead was appointed as poet laureate. Before him the position of laureateship was granted to Thomas Gray, who however refused the position. So after him being a laureate he proceeded to write annual effusions in the royal honour. But he was not altogether happy in his position and this evidence we get from “A Pathetic Apology for All Laureates, Past, Present and to Come,” this was not altogether published but was meant to be privately circulated among his friends. His sentimental comedies for eg. The Trip to Scotland (1770) and 1762’s The School for Lovers proved to be his best and most successful plays. Finally, He died at home in Charles Street, London on 14 April 1785 and is buried in South Audley Street Chapel.
