In biology, the application of mathematical models has a long tradition. Indeed, mathematical models have made classical contributions in virtually every field of biology. While traditional models are usually based on deterministic descriptions, stochasticity plays an important role in many biological processes. After all, variables in biology are often "noisy" and usually discrete rather than continuous. Consequently, stochastic models have fundamentally altered our perspective on many fields of biology, including gene expression, cell growth, behavior, ecology and evolution. In this talk, I will discuss several models that highlight the diverse roles of noise in biological systems. These examples demonstrate that stochasticity can qualitatively change biological behavior. Depending on the system, noise can be a creative force or a destructive one; a blessing or a nuisance; a feature or a bug.
