What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids, usually at the base of the eyelashes.
Blepharitis symptoms:
Red, swollen eyelids, Burning or itching eyes, Flaky skin or crust on the eyelid margin, Grittiness or foreign body sensation, Dry, irritated eyes.
Types of Blepharitis
1. Anterior blepharitis – Affects the outside of the eyelid near the eyelashes, often caused by bacteria or seborrheic dermatitis. Certain germs produce enzymes that break down the tear film’s oils, worsening redness.
2. Posterior blepharitis – Affects the inner eyelid and is linked to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), where the oil glands get clogged. This type is common in people with rosacea or recurrent styes.
Many cases of blepharitis are also associated with Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis—tiny eye mites that live in eyelash follicles and oil glands. Their waste products can cause hyperkeratinization, perifollicular inflammation, and all that redness and crusting you see on the eyelids.
How to Get Rid of Blepharitis?
Step 1 – Cleanse & Disinfect the Eyelids
Start with a warm compress for 5–10 minutes to loosen debris and oils. Then use lid scrubs or blepharitis wipes with tea tree oil or green tea extract to remove crust and rid eye mites.
Step 2 – Eyelid Hygiene
Use products like Ocusoft Lid Scrubs or over-the-counter blepharitis wipes daily for at least 6 weeks to break the cycle of inflammation.
Step 3 – Massage the Meibomian Glands
Gently massage the eyelid margin in small circles to express clogged oils. This improves the tear film and reduces dryness and grittiness.
Step 4 – Reduce Inflammation
For mild cases, use artificial tears or lubricating drops. For severe cases, your eye doctor may prescribe antibiotic ointments like bacitracin or erythromycin, or even steroid eye drops. Avoid rubbing your eyes, and manage related conditions like rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis to speed healing.
Step 5 – Consistency & Lifestyle Changes
Blepharitis can be chronic, so daily eyelid cleaning is key—even after symptoms improve. Avoid eye makeup during flare-ups, take screen breaks to reduce eye strain, and change your pillowcase twice a week to minimize buildup.
If symptoms persist, see an ophthalmologist for in-office treatments like meibomian gland expression or thermal pulsation therapy (LipiFlow), which clears blocked glands.
