"This is a shorter version of the Day 3 long video"
Day 3 in Kabul, Afghanistan — one of the most meaningful days of my journey so far. Today I explored some of Kabul’s most important cultural and historical landmarks, many of which require special permission or clearance from the Taliban authorities. Access is never guaranteed, and you can’t just walk in as a tourist — even with planning. I was able to visit most of the sites, but I also missed one palace because permission wasn’t granted that day. The fact is women are not allowed in some places. This is part of the reality of traveling through Afghanistan today.
Driving Around TV Hills
My day started with a scenic drive around the famous TV Hills — steep roads, mountainside stone houses, and dramatic views over Kabul. We even got lost in an extremely narrow lane, which led me into local neighborhoods and landscapes most visitors never get to see.
Today I visited several significant landmarks, but many of these sites require advance approval — and even with approval, you’re not always guaranteed entry.
📍 Bird Street – More than 100-year-old cultural marketplace to trade birds, antiques and homemade goods for generations.
📍 Mandavi Bazaar – One of Kabul’s oldest markets, once part of Afghanistan's ancient trading route
📍 Qargha Reservoir – A scenic lake built in the 1950s and popular for horseback riding
📍 Paghman Palace (Taq-e-Zafar) – A symbol of King Amanullah Khan’s modernization era
📍 National Museum of Afghanistan – Preserving ancient Afghan identity and diverse history.
📍 Darul Aman Palace – Iconic 1920s Neoclassical Palace restored after decades of conflict as a symbol of resilience.
📍 Babur Garden – Created in the 1500s by the 1st Mughal Emperor Babur. One of the Oldest Mughal Garden and Babur's final resting place
Note: I missed one palace because access was not permitted that day — this is common, and every traveler should be prepared for last-minute changes.
Afghan Hospitality (One of The Best in the World)
What truly made the day unforgettable were the people:
• Kids and families wanting to talk and take photos
• Heartfelt conversations with locals
• A man almost getting hit by a car just to give me fresh warm bread
• A delicious Afghan lunch
• And a very adventurous dinner! (You won't believe what I eat)
Afghanistan is full of surprises and kindness!
