The original gameplay was a hybrid of different laserdisc genres. It is mainly a collection of firing stages similar to Astron Belt and Cobra Command. It also has action sequences similar to those found in games like Ninja Hayate or Dragon's Lair. Similar to Taito's other laserdisc efforts (Time Gal and Ninja Hayate), Star Blazers was never released outside Japan.
