Jackie and the chicks woke up Sunday morning under overcast skies. A dusting of white snow from the night before partially covered the feathers on their backs. Sunny and Gizmo moved some loose nesting material as they cuddled up in front of Mama. Gizmo, who was likely hungry, took a few sweet little nibbles of Sunny's feathers. After Mama flew off for a break, they both did some wingersizing and preening as they waited for breakfast to arrive. Sunny managed to eye a very small frozen leftover snack in the nest to nibble on.
Both chicks then laid back down, fiddled with some small sticks and gave each other beaky kisses. When Jackie returned with a nice big fish, Gizmo got over to it first and since it was already unzipped, it was easier to tear into. Sunny waited patiently for a turn, nibbling on another nest snack. When Gizmo seemed satisfied and laid back down, Sunny took over the breakfish. Mom hung out on the front porch until Dad brought a second fish. Jackie flew out to handle a couple of ravens while Shadow ate and fed the chicks, who stuffed their crops even more.
By afternoon, most of the snow had melted around the nest. As Sunny and Gizmo felt the breeze coming through, they felt the wind under their wings and worked on hops and jumps. They also gripped sticks with their strong talons and stood on their food while getting more efficient at self feeding. Sunny held down a partially eaten fish, claiming it, then ate it all, even gulping down the tail.
Later on, Gizmo grabbed hold of a fish and began to self feed, but Mama came in from the front porch, took it over and fed both chicks. Shadow brought in a pile of dried grass fluff which an energetic Sunny spread around, while Gizmo chose a quick nap.
It was another productive week for our sweet, young pair, as they continue to become stronger and conquer new milestones every day. We are excited to see what's next for this beautiful eagle family!
