Working Split Frequency: Attempting to work the 3G0YA Easter Island DXpedition

If you’re new to amateur radio and you haven’t heard about “working a split”, this video will show a real world example of split frequency operation. DX stations often transmit on one frequency and receive on another. They might do this so their own transmissions don’t get covered up by the pileup of stations who are trying to work them. They might even transmit in the Extra portion of the band but listen in the General portion. When I worked the battleship U.S.S. Iowa (callsign NEPM), they transmitted above the upper limit of the 20m band, on 14.375 MHz, but listened in the General Portion of the band, on 14.255 MHz. In this video I cover the workflow for working CW split frequency operation while I attempt to work the 3G0YA Easter Island DXpedition.

Note: In the video, I’m using the Yaesu FTdx5000MP, but the same techniques could be used with the FTdx101D, FTdx101MP, and FTdx10. With the FTdx10, I would press the TXW button to listen to my transmit frequency and locate the exact frequency that others are using to break through the pileup. I showed how to use the TXW button in the FTdx10 tutorial series.

Certain other transceivers from Yaesu might include a similar type of “quick-split” functionality that you see me use in this video. The FT-710 does not include the quick-split function. In the FT-710 tutorial series, available for S7 (Executive) or S9 (VIP) Patreon support team members, I show how to work a split with that particular radio. Additionally, S7 (Executive) and S9 (VIP) members have access to the more than 100 FTdx10 tutorial videos and the S9 (VIP) members can access the FTdx101 tutorial videos.

Note that most of the operating techniques I show and teach on my channel can be applied to other transceivers, even other brands of transceivers. Some knobs or buttons might be labeled differently but the function is the same. I have no allegiance to Yaesu. No manufacturer makes a perfect radio. They all have strengths and they all have weaknesses. I like to point those out. Yaesu thinks that I am targeting them, but I am not. In fact, they generally have the fewest weaknesses. It’s just that I want my viewers to know the good, the bad, and the ugly, so they can make informed purchase decisions.
