Léa Seydoux on telling the untold stories in Kursk: The Last Mission

The 2000 Kursk submarine tragedy was a key moment for Vladimir Putin's fledgling Russian government, and the fight to save the sailors trapped on the vessel is now told in Thomas Vinterberg's Kursk: The Last Mission (aka The Command). Starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Léa Seydoux, Colin Firth, Max von Sydow, August Diehl, Peter Simonischek, Bjarne Henriksen, Magnus Millang, Artemiy Spiridonov, Joel Basman, Pit Bukowski and Matthias Schweighofer.

Vinterberg directed Robert Rodat's adaptation of Robert Moore's book 'A Time to Die' with Moore himself.

Stefan Pape sits down with the cast and director to talk about finding the right way to tell such a strong and tragic story. Seydoux talks about educating herself on the event through the film, and how it was to focus on those left behind by the disaster. Vinterberg recalls his feelings on reading the script for the first time, and how as a society we shy away from death and how facing it on film can help us being that conversation. Matthias Schoenaerts talks about reuniting with Vinterberg, and how the acceptance and surrender to fate plays a huge part of the film for him. He mentions the feeling of family in the crew, and the strength his character draws from them and how that mirrors the filmmaking experience.

Plot: The film follows the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster and the governmental negligence that followed. As the sailors fight for survival, their families desperately battle political obstacles and impossible odds to save them.

The film is out on the 12th of July, 2019 in the UK.
