Welcome to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, a charming small town with a population of just over 5,000 people. Prairie du Chien was founded in 1685 by the French explorer Jacques Marquette. The city was originally named La Pointe du Chien, which means "Dog's Point" in French. The name was changed to Prairie du Chien in 1763. Prairie du Chien was an important fur trading post during the 18th and 19th centuries. The city was also a stop on the Oregon Trail. Today, Prairie du Chien is a popular tourist destination. The city is home to a number of historical sites, including Fort Crawford Museum, Villa Louis, and the French Colonial Center. Prairie du Chien is also a popular spot for fishing, boating, and hiking.
