Horror Month (Saturn Edition) Enemy Zero, Part 2

The sixth proper annual "Horror Month." I had never played Saturn games before, so in this one, I am exclusively streaming horror games from the Saturn!

Enemy Zero is a sci fi horror game by Warp from 1996. Yet another game that makes use of pre-rendered FMV, though this time it's only for exploring inside rooms, which are connected by real-time 3D environments. This Kenji Eno game is a follow up to D, another classic adventure game that used pre-rendered FMV for exploring a mansion and solving puzzles. This game is set in a spaceship, and it still has puzzle solving, but now action combat in the real-time 3D sections is also very important. The gimmick of the game is that enemies are invisible, and have to be detected by sound.

It's actually not that difficult to detect and kill enemies if you pay close attention, but this game has another unique facet: saving is limited, and not only does saving itself use energy, but loading uses energy as well. Every time you load the game, a little bit of energy is used up. Many people might find this too punishing, but of course they're just wrong; this is actually quite brilliant for a horror game, as it avoids the problem of save points making you feel safe, and using your save to experiment with things. In this game you are never safe, a death always consumes resources so you always have to be careful.

There are different difficulty settings as well, on the normal setting I found the difficulty balance to be just about perfect. Towards the end of the game where you have to do a few long stretches with ghosts, it gets extremely tense; I would go as far as to say that absolutely no horror game is more tense than this one! The game also has a very unique and cool soundtrack, an interesting story, and a great look. This game is right up there with the best Silent Hills and Fatal Frames, I would say it's one of the best horror games I've ever played!
