This video is in the Re-Engineering the Chess Classics series! To celebrate the publication of my new book (written together with my childhood coach Steve Giddins) I am examining a series of classic games - just as we did in the book - using the creative engine analysis techniques I described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" At the same time, I get to indulge my current obsessions for a couple of classic players ;) and this time the lucky "victim" is Richard Teichmann. Born in 1868, Teichmann is one of those fateful players who enjoyed enormous respect from his peers during his career - Capablanca noted him as "one of the finest players in the world" and was obviously proud of an endgame victory against him - and yet who is almost completely unknown nowadays, his name perhaps cropping up occasionally as the victim in a game played by his more famous colleagues. He was indeed a very strong player - very much like Schlechter in the sense that he possessed a strong all-round game with no obvious weaknesses. He could attack, he could defend, his openings were advanced for the time (he, together with Schlechter, worked at the 1912-1916 edition of Bilguier's Handbuch des Schachspiels - the ECO of its time) and he was also a strong endgame player. This game - taken from an exhibition match in which openings were crazy and honours were shared - shows the normally restrained Carl Schlechter and Richard Teichmann letting their hair down and getting on with some old-fashioned romanmtic play! Schlechter sacs, Teichmann takes... and this time the sacrificer pulls through!
I’m grandmaster Matthew Sadler, a 2-times British Champion, and ranked in the world’s top 50 for many years. I’m also a prolific author. My latest book "Re-Engineering the Chess Classics" appeared in May 2023. It uses the techniques described in "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" to analyse afresh thirty-five of the most fascinating and complex chess games ever played by World Champions and other top grandmasters.
