Letterlocking: Letter from Portugal Regent to Pope Pope Clement VII, Portugal (1532)(UH0158)

Modelled after a letter from Eduardo Pacis to Pope Pope Clement VII, Portugal (1532), Vatican Apostolic Archive, Principi 7, fol. 347r.

Model found in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), Unlocking History Research Group archive, MC 0760.

A letter sent from the King of Portugal to the Pope used an attached lock to secure the letterpacket. Two angled parallel cuts beginning from one of the outer panels of the letter substrate create the attached lock. After forming the letterpacket, the lock laced through two perpendicular slits made through the packet. This technique has only been documented so far in Portuguese letters.
