1971 Indo-Pak War: How it unfolded – Explained by Maroof Raza

The 1971 Indo-Pak war lasted for a fortnight, but saw complete synergy in the operations of India’s three armed services, especially in India’s eastern theatre. When the bugle calls for battle were sounded, the Indian navy blockaded the coast of East Pakistan, the Indian air force went hammer and tongs for the Pakistan air force, and the Indian army launched a number of bold military operations - the heliborne and paradrop operations and the tank crossings across the huge Meghna river - left the Pakistan’s military commanders, stunned. Pakistan had always believed that the ‘real’ war would be fought on India’s western front – like it was in 1965 – and India’s eastern front would be a side show that India’s commanders would ignore. The end outcome was quite the opposite; and it eventually led to the Pakistan army’s surrender with 93,000 personnel at Dacca Race Course on 16 December’ 71.
