Hippocampi from Greek mythology were creatures with the upper body of a horse and the lower body of a fish. Created by the sea god Poseidon, they pulled his chariot over both the waves of the sea and the solid ground of land. Listen for the ocean in the A sections’ rocking accompaniment and for the pounding of hooves on dry ground in the B section as the team of hippocampi pull Poseidon through the ocean, onto land, then back to his underwater realm.
