Need for Drones for Surveillance

On 2nd January 2016, a heavily armed group of terrorists had attacked the Pathankot Air Force Station, which is part of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force. The attack claimed the life of 5 terrorists, 1 Civilian and 7 security personnel. Back on 27th June 2021, two low intensity explosions were reported early morning in the technical area of Jammu Air Force Station. One caused minor damage to the roof of a building while the other exploded in an open area. There were no casualties or damage to equipment in the attack. The two incidents have been an eye opener for the Indian air force and they have the realized need for better surveillance & anti drone technology. In the lines of the same, Indian air force has purchased anti drone system from DRDO in small numbers and have ordered anti-drone system from Gurutvaa Systems and Zen Technology.

BEL Hexacopter for Air force

Now, BEL has offered its latest and newly designed Hexa-copter drone for Surveillance and protection of airbase from any aerial intrusion by UAVs & drones. The UAV system can be used for aerial reconnaissance and intelligence gathering as well. It can take image snapshots at any time during the flight and the UAV system is built in a way to withstand harsh environments.

Specifications

The system consists of a hexacopter, electro-optic payload, auto winching system with tether cable and a ground control station. “It can fly up to 100 metres in height and has electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) sensors. It is capable of surveying up to 2 km of radius in daylight and 1 km at night. This hexacopter belongs to the category of tethered drones i.e. it is powered by wired cables throughout its flight that allows it to fly for 6 hours. After 6 hours of flight, it has to be grounded for cooling down its motor. After 1 hour of rest it can again be used for another 6 hours. Additionally, hexacopters has provision for internal battery for operation during power failure. The tethered drones find its advantage in ground stations where power supply is available throughout day-night.

Moreover, BEL is also working to develop Hexacopter-20, a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV capable of performing collaborative missions with other multicopters. Hexacopter can be customized to take and activate desired payloads like HADR (Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief), Light Detection, and Ranging (LIDAR).
