scott & ramona (scott pilgrim vs the world 10th anniversary) | smithereens

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY to one of - or, in my heart, probably the best film that was ever made.

I cannot believe it's been ten years already. Words cannot express how much I love this film. And I only love it more with every rewatch, I keep catching new things, on every level: story, directing, easter eggs in sets and costumes, editing, my gosh the editing on this thing. The way it was shot and edited is mindblowing, you could pause it at any one moment and find something to marvel at. Don't get me started on the incredible cast! Chris Evans and Brandon Routh as evil exes, actual superheroes (Captain America/The Human Torch + Superman/The Atom), not to mention Brie Larson who was only 19 at the time (aka Captain Marvel), Ramona Flowers herself, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Huntress in Birds of Prey. And this has Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza! Together! This film is perfect, you can fight me.

Now it will surprise absolutely no one to know I am way too deep into this and need to address the Ramona/Knives debacle. I have always been team Ramona, but only after the first few watches I really started to wonder why. Because on paper I can understand why people would want Scott to end up with the regular girl who loved him all along rather than a girl he possibly idolises without really knowing her.
But, aside from Knives turning into a stalker, he and Ramona are actually so similar under the surface. They both run away from difficult situations, mostly their past relationships which left their lovers scorned, they both tend to avoid decisions and confrontations BUT they both end up fighting for each other, probably being the first person the other really fought for.

That's something I tried to show in this video, how this is not (just) a nerd getting the girl of his dreams. Ramona actually falls for Scott and fights for him too, as best as she can. That is why it is so heartbreaking to see the original ending for the film where he goes back to Knives and she leaves completely alone. Never mind that Knives shouldn't take him back after everything, but Ramona finally finding someone she can be with and having to leave is so, so sad. So glad it didn't end up like that. La La Land is already a favourite film where I can't get over the ending, I needed this win.
