Carbon offsets have remained at the centre of a global debate for several years. Carbon offsets are mainly used by polluting industries to balance their carbon emissions. Many carbon offsetting projects are related to forest plantations or stopping deforestation in places like the Amazon rainforest.
Companies can set up carbon offsetting projects, get them approved by organisations like Verra and then apply for carbon credits that contribute to their overall carbon reduction or net zero goals. However, critics argue that carbon offsets give polluters a license to pollute and don't encourage any absolute carbon emission reductions or a change in business practices. Yet, massive fossil fuel companies like Shell have set aside hundreds of millions of dollars on carbon offsets.
Recently, a report found that most carbon offsets do not work and lead to no emissions reductions. This sparked a debate amongst critics and supporters alike, suggesting that carbon offsets still have a long way to go if they are to be used appropriately.
