What happens if you lose an engine at night or in IMC in a single-engine airplane?
In this video, I test GlideScope, a custom ForeFlight map overlay designed to improve situational awareness during an engine failure, especially at night or in IMC. The overlay highlights open land and land cover to help pilots make more informed decisions when options are limited.
During this flight, I simulate an engine failure in IMC and fly “toward the green” on the map. As we descend, I compare what the overlay shows to what’s actually visible outside to see how well it matches reality.
This is not a guarantee of a safe landing — GlideScope is an informational decision-support tool only, and the pilot always retains full responsibility for all flight decisions.
Topics covered:
Engine failure at night (simulated)
Emergency landing decision-making
ForeFlight custom map overlays
Situational awareness in low visibility
Single-engine GA safety tools
Disclaimer:
All maneuvers in this video were conducted safely and legally. GlideScope is for informational purposes only and does not replace pilot judgment, training, or emergency procedures.
