A herniated disc occurs when the inner nucleus of a disc pushes through a tear in its outer annulus. In simple terms, a disc has a soft center and a tougher outer ring. When the soft center escapes, it can press into areas of the spine it shouldn’t, often irritating nearby nerves.
Some people with disc herniations feel no pain at all because the nerves aren’t affected. These individuals are asymptomatic and often unaware of their condition. Others, however, may experience intense pain when the disc compresses or irritates nerve tissues.
The severity of pain depends on where the compression occurs—whether in the neck, mid-back, or lower back—and the amount of pressure applied. Localized pain near the disc is possible, but the most troubling symptoms appear when nerve compression causes radiating pain. This may include shooting pain in the arms or legs, tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, or spasms. In some cases, organ function can even be affected since nerves control body systems.
Many patients notice that disc pain feels worse at night. This is because the nervous system becomes more sensitive when the body is resting. As you lie down to relax, your nerves can become more sensitive, amplifying pain signals. While some patients notice pain decreases after lying down for a while, the first attempt to fall asleep often feels more uncomfortable.
What is the best sleeping position for someone with a herniated disc? The answer: whichever position reduces your pain. For many people, lying on the side with a pillow between the knees helps keep the hips square and reduces rotation. Others find relief lying on their back with a small pillow under the neck for spinal alignment. The least recommended position is lying face down, as it twists the neck and can worsen cervical disc problems.
Treatment for herniated discs varies depending on the severity and location of the disc. Conservative care may include chiropractic adjustments, exercise therapy, rehabilitation, lifestyle modifications, or rest. These approaches can often alleviate symptoms and, in some cases, aid in the healing of discs. If pain is severe or persistent, treatments may include medications, injections, or even surgery, though surgery is typically a last resort.
The best way to protect disc health is to maintain good posture, a healthy weight, engage in regular physical activity, and undergo periodic spinal checkups. Herniated discs are often the result of poor alignment and long-term stress on the spine. By correcting posture and addressing lifestyle factors, the risk of disc issues can be significantly reduced.
At our center, we focus on both prevention and treatment. For individuals with herniated discs, we focus on alleviating symptoms while addressing the underlying causes, including spinal alignment and lifestyle habits, to help patients recover and prevent future issues.
