U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. John Canley was buried in Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery on August 25, 2022.
A U.S. Marine, Canley served for 28 years, including three combat tours in Vietnam.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions during the Battle of Hue City in 1968. While serving as company gunnery sergeant, Canley and his marines fought off fierce enemy attacks. After his company commander was wounded, Canley took command of his company and led attacks while routinely braving enemy fire to evacuate wounded marines.
