ANZAC Day was first observed by both Australia and New Zealand on April 25 1916, in remembrance of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought together at Gallipoli during WW1. Today, ANZAC Day commemorates Australians and New Zealanders who died and served in all military operations. Anzac Day is also observed in Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands and Niue.

The name ANZAC Cove was officially recognised by the Turkish government on Anzac Day in 1985. Many people now travel to Gallipoli each year to to be present at the commemorative service at ANZAC Cove on April 25.

The ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice is a very important aspect of Australian national identity. Many refer to it as the spirit of the ANZACS.

Many Australians who lost their lives in war weren't thinking they could save the world or defeat evil regimes. As on the hills at Gallipoli, the trenches of France, the patrols in Vietnam, in the freezing Korean weather, or on the rugged Kokoda Track, Australians were looking after their mates alongside them. Many Australian veterans, have in past generations, and now in the present generation, marched on ANZAC Day in memory of their mates left behind, and the ones that have passed on before them.

Music and song used in Australia on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day - 'Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching?' is a national war memorial song and a tribute to the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage and sacrifice. The song was recorded March 2001 and is suitable as an ANZAC Day song and a Remembrance Day song.

Some years ago the author of the Australian War Heroes Song was requested for the song to be used in New Zealand - "Please could you email me music to your anzac song. I would like to use it for our school anzac service. I am in NZ so would like to adapt the words to fit NZ." The author responded - "I am delighted to get a request for the song to be used in NZ. Yes, you can adapt the song for NZ as our ANZAC heritage strongly bonds our two countries together."

Information regarding the song 'Can you hear Australia's heroes marching?' - The heroes song was created from Peter Barnes' experience in visiting the Adelaide River War Cemetery (114 kms south of Darwin) in the Northern Territory and seeing the graves of Australians who gave their lives in the service and defence of their country. Peter felt he should do something within his capabilities to honour the memory of such incredible sacrifice.
