Twin cylinder steam engine 2.5" bore and stroke. Three drum water tube boiler supplies steam at up 250 psi, although 50 psi will suffice for a normal cruising speed of 5mph. In this video the engine is just idling while the boat is tied up . The exhaust steam from the engine passes to a condenser outside the hull and returns to the feed water tank via the air pump (seen on the left of the engine) which also produces a vacuum in the condenser, thereby making the engine more efficient. At cruising speed the vacuum is normally 25" of mercury, which is equivalent to a suck on the engine of around 12 psi. The steam pump on the other side of the engine, apart from supplying feed water to the boiler, can also be used for bilge pumping, filling the wet ashpan or transferring water to and from the reserve feed tank.
