Grand Canyon Rim to Rim is on many hiker's bucket lists. We were fortunate to go to the Grand Canyon recently to do just that. Things didn't go exactly the way we planned. What happens in this video is not uncommon.

Many Grand Canyon veterans say "respect the canyon". It has taken me a while to fully understand what that means. I am still learning it. For the longest time I thought they were referring to keeping it clean, leaving it better than you found it and "leave no trace" like many learn in the boy scouts. I have learned it's so much more than that.

The Grand Canyon is a beautiful amazing place but it's also dangerous. Much more dangerous than people imagine. Yes, "respect the canyon" means everything listed above but it also means be prepared because it can be very dangerous.

The more you "respect" that fact and the better prepared you are, the more you will be able to enjoy it. Things can still happen but you will be better able to handle it. And better able to get yourself to safety if you need to.

We helped a few others on this trip who were having trouble. They were not prepared and they suffered. It was easy to see that their experience was not what they imagined when they planned to go. Their excitement and expectation turned into a real struggle. I hope they go back again. And, I hope they are better prepared the next time.
