Romanian is a Romance language primarily spoken in Romania and Moldova, with an estimated 24-28 million native speakers worldwide. It's the only Romance language that developed in Eastern Europe, which gives it some unique characteristics compared to its Western Romance relatives (French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese).

The language evolved from Vulgar Latin brought to the region during the Roman occupation of Dacia (roughly modern Romania) in the 2nd century CE. After the Roman withdrawal in 271 CE, the language continued to develop in isolation from other Romance languages, absorbing influences from surrounding Slavic, Hungarian, Turkish, and Greek languages.

Romanian uses the Latin alphabet with five additional letters (ă, â, î, ș, ț). Its grammatical structure maintains several features of Latin that other Romance languages have lost, including a three-gender system (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and a case system with nominative/accusative, genitive/dative, and vocative cases.

The vocabulary is predominantly Latin-based (about 75-85%), but Romanian has absorbed significant Slavic influence (10-15%), as well as words from Turkish, Hungarian, German, Greek, and more recently, French and English.

One distinctive feature of Romanian is the postponed definite article, where the article is attached to the end of nouns rather than appearing before them as in other Romance languages. For example, "the man" is "omul" (om + ul), not "el om" as the pattern might be in other Romance languages.

Romanian also has a rich system of verbal moods and tenses, including some unique to the Balkan linguistic area, like the presumptive mood used to express probability or supposition.

Due to its geographical position as part of the Balkan Sprachbund (linguistic area), Romanian shares features with non-Romance languages like Bulgarian, Albanian, and Greek, making it a fascinating bridge between the Romance and Slavic linguistic worlds.
