On May 9th, @itworks organised the knowledge booster "Data Mesh: How Data Modelling Builds Cross-domain Communication" about this new and fascinating concept, described in Zhamak Dehghani's book: "Data Mesh: Delivering Data-Driven Value at Scale".
The Data Mesh is based on 4 principles:
Data Ownership by Domain, making it a decentralised, distributed and domain-oriented architecture
Data as a Product, not as a by-product, making "Data Product Thinking" crucial
Data is available everywhere, allowing self-service
Data Governance by domain, allowing federated governance
We believe strongly in this "shift-left" (away from technology and tools towards the business and actual value for them) of understanding the data, thinking about data products, data quality and data governance.
Data Mesh is to Data Architectures, what microservices is to Application and Software Architecture. It is definitely a concept that you should look at, and the key to successful implementation really lies in the cross-domain communication as Juha Korpela explains in this video, and demonstrates via the cloud-based and business-oriented data modelling tool Ellie.
