Thoughtful Thoughts 8.4.22 by John Dunning. The Holy Spirit - Part 2.
Faith In Action - William Bradford
Introduction…
Hebrews 11 lists some of the men of faith, because of what God was able to do through them because they obeyed God and trusted Him by putting their faith into action.
There have been many more like them since then - who God did great things through. Last time we looked at William Booth, who said, “While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight. While little children go hungry as they do now, I’ll fight. While men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight. While there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl on the streets, while there is one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll
fight. I’ll fight to the very end.” William Booth.
The Great Escape…
Following the “Faith in Action” theme, showing examples of Spirit-filled men, we look at a man that was used by God to help “found” the USA with a document that started Settlers off at least with Christian values…
The Americans have Thanksgiving Day every year on the fourth Thursday of November. It was started by the Pilgrim Fathers one year after arriving in America on the Mayflower, to say thank you to God for sparing their lives and bringing in a harvest just in time to save their lives. It is still celebrated today, although perhaps it is more meaningful for Christians who still recognize the hand of God in saving their lives. The new American settlers fled from England - and an American history website records…
“The pilgrims came to America in search of religious freedom. At the time, England required its citizens to belong to the Church of England. People wanted to practice their religious beliefs freely, and so many fled to the Netherlands, where laws were more flexible… They decided to set out for the New World and build a new life. With the help of the Virginia Company’s financing, the pilgrims boarded the Mayflower in 1620 and sailed to the Americas.”
Now bear in mind that just 88 years earlier, the reach of English Bishops was so great that Bishop Stokesley bribed Henry Philipps to befriend and betray Bible translator William Tyndale, who had escaped England by fleeing to the Netherlands. He then ended up being kidnapped and taken to Brussels which was part of the Catholic Church empire, where he could still be burned at the stake for translating the Bible, which Catholic priests called heresy.
William Bradford…
William Bradford led an escape from England of his church of ‘puritans’, called separatists.
Amidst the persecutions, an American website records this on their history: “William Bradford was born in 1590 in Austerfield, a farming community in Yorkshire, England. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by relatives. A long illness left him too weak to do much farm work, and instead, he focused on reading the Bible and other religious texts. As a teenager, Bradford was drawn to a growing Puritan sect known as the Separatists, and a congregation led by William Brewster and John Robinson in the nearby village of Scrooby. The Separatists sought to recreate what they saw as the simpler, more pious life of the earliest Christians by freeing themselves from the rituals and hierarchies of the Church of England”.
William Bradford was elected the second Governor by the settlers in 1621 after the first representative, Carver, died after just a year in office. Bradford then held the post for over 35 years. He was given the credit by the settlers for his organizational skills leading to their survival in the early years, especially year one. He befriended the local Indian tribe who were friendly. He is given credit for being a co-writer of the settler’s founding document, called “The Mayflower Compact”, along with Brewster and Carver. The document declares that laws will be Christian.
