From a Spring to a River ...The Vaal River has its source near Breyten a Spring coming out of the Ground
The Vaal River is South Africa’s second-longest river, flowing for more than 1,120 kilometres across the heart of the country. Rising out the ground near Breyten in Mpumalanga, the river winds its way through the Free State, forming natural borders with Gauteng and the North West Province, before finally joining the Orange River on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Vaal has long been known as the lifeblood of the Highveld, providing water for millions of people, supporting agriculture, and sustaining industry and mining. It is also deeply connected to South Africa’s history, having shaped communities and trade along its banks for centuries.
In this video, we trace the river back to its source near Breyten, exploring the landscapes where one of South Africa’s most important rivers begins its journey.
