Multi-layered packaging aka MLP is notorious for being found in black spots, amidst snow, amongst forest leaves, in mountains, in park grass. Why??
1. No recycling value
2. Chips, biscuits, pan masala, ketchup, atta, namkeen, snacks, insta mix, dry fruits - almost every food item is packed in MLP for shelf impact (colourful prints) and shelf life (6-9 months).
3. Distribution: because of longer shelf life that MLP promises, products travel great distances and are now available in the smallest of shops in the remotest of places!
How to recognise MLP?
Check the number in the recycling logo, 7 is typically non recyclable packaging
Solution: buy unpackaged, buy local - items will be fresh!
Thank you to Abir, Ishana and Vani for leading the way in buying unpackaged! We need more of you to join the dabba gang! Also, more people to voice their support towards EPR - Extended Producers' Responsibility, to stop production of non-recyclable packaging material.
