I Can't Believe that You're in Love with Me

This song, written way back in 1926 by Jimmy McHugh with lyrics by Clarence Gaskill, is one of those perennial favorites that will never become old or forgotten. Many famous stars including Billy Holiday, Bing Crosby, and Louis Armstrong produced difference vocal and instrumental versions, and here it is on a Hammond B3, somewhat, but not exclusively, influenced by Eddie Layton's Hammond version on his "Skatin' with Layton" album. On this video, I have used a technique known as manual bridging to play an extra countermelody which, if you listen to it without seeing what I am doing might lead you to think that I either have three hands, or that I resorted to overdubbing to get that third part in, but I am actually using a playing technique that appears in some classical organ music, and was also employed by many of the better theater organists such as George Wright, Jesse Crawford or Buddy Cole to add interest to some of their playing. It does indeed take some practice and it is physically easier on the diving board keys of theater organs than the "waterfall" keys of a Hammond, but it is still possible on a Hammond and as you can hear, adds an interesting and useful musical effect to Hammond playing. Also of note is my use for the second verse, which I played in Db, an interesting effect known as a ping-pong echo, the repeat rate of which is the same as the tempo of the music. If you play this back in stereo, which is really a must for the playing of all music, you will notice how the echo ricochets back and forth between the two stereo channels. In my notes along with the video in places, I have a brief explanation of how we get such an effect, although it occurs naturally in certain structures such as under some large masonry arch bridges and in some sports arenas where particular arrangements of PA speakers create these and other unusual repeat echoes.
