Basic Counting and Probability | Probability and Statistics | NJ Wildberger

We review some basic counting techniques and results that occur frequently when we study probabilities: the number of words of length k possible from n letters, with repetitions allowed or not allowed, and the number of ordered or unordered subsets of size k from n objects. Here the binomial coefficients are naturally involved.

Then we introduce basic examples involving probabilities: rolling dice, flipping coins, getting dealt poker hands etc. We find the probability that a given number of people share a birthday. Calculating probabilities often naturally involved questions of counting. We also explain the connections between probability and odds: an important understanding for gambling/horse racing/lotteries and games of chance.
