Alex Koffman and Gail Mangurten of Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, in a virtual concert in September 2020 for the Highland Park Seniors Center.
Alex Koffman, who immigrated to Chicago from Minsk, Belarus, has been the violinist and Musical Director of Maxwell Street Klezmer Band since the 1990s. He also directs the Junior Klezmer Orchestra, as well as several adult grassroots klezmer bands. His conservatory training combined with klezmer technique and improvisational skills are on display in this duet.
The first melody is called a Volochl, a little lament in 3/4 time, as learned from the Kammen Dance Portfolio (1920s). The second tune is a traditional klezmer dance called "Freylachs From Podoly," as learned from a recording by one of our favorite contemporary groups, Die Naye Kapelye. Videography: Dmitriy Yakubov.
