Fighting coronavirus will take millions of tests per day. For Quest Diagnostics, providing timely results takes a little-seen logistics chain that includes couriers, an overnight sorting of bagged specimens – and an airline tying it all together. This is how specimens like covid-19 swabs and blood move from a testing center to a lab for processing using a fleet of vehicles and aircraft. The medical laboratory business is big business: Quest has about 4,000 couriers making 80,000 stops a day, and its own airline of 23 planes serving 63 cities a night.
