German countertenor Jochen Kowalski singing Prince Orlofsky's couplet Ich Lade Gern Mir Gäste Ein from Johann Strauss II's 1874 operetta Die Fledermaus. Video taken from the AIDS Benefit concert given at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin in November 1995 conduced by Lawrence Foster. In this operetta, the role of Orlofsky was originally intended as a trouser role for a female mezzo or contralto. Today, some of the top-notch countertenors are making it their own as well.
