Swing Rhythm for Piedmont Blues

In the last lesson, I introducted you to a couple of picking patterns than can be woven together to create a somewhat Piedmont sound. In that lesson, we focused on getting your finger movements down cold.

But, it didn't necessarily sound that much like Blind Blake or Blind Boy Fuller, did it?

There's a few reasons for that, but the most glaring of which is lack of the swing rhythm. A great deal of blues is playing in the swing or shuffle rhythm and in this lesson, I go into detail on how to get the swing sound and apply it to the basic Piedmont Picking Pattern.

Like I said, there's more to be said about how to make this piece sound Piedmont, but none of the guitar techniques coming your way will have quite the impact that swinging the rhythm will. Plus, this rhythm applies to so much more than just Piedmont. Even your basic blues shuffle is an example of the swung rhythm.

So take some time, grab a metronome and work on really feeling the swing beat.
