The King's Guard, a sentry post at Buckingham Palace and St. James's Palace, is overseen by the British Army's Household Division. This division also maintains sentry postings at Horse Guards, known as the King's Life Guard.

Since the 20th century, Horse Guards has served as the primary headquarters for London District, managing all regular and Territorial Army units in Greater London. Designed by William Kent in the Palladian style, Horse Guards is a Grade I listed building and requires ongoing maintenance. While only members of the Royal Family or cavalrymen on duty are permitted to drive or ride through the archway, visitors and tourists can freely walk through from Whitehall to Horse Guards Parade.

Two mounted cavalry troopers from The King's Life Guard stand guard at the building from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm daily. The Life Guard change takes place at 11:00 am daily and 10:00 am on Sundays.

Regardless of the season or weather, a new King's Life Guard arrives from Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge every day to assume guard duties for the next twenty-four hours.

As mounted box men facing Whitehall or dismounted sentries in the Archway and Front Yard, they stoically endure the attention of countless tourists. Simultaneously, they uphold one of London's most enduring traditions, a cavalry vigil that has been maintained on this site for over three and a half centuries, from the troubled times of Charles I to the present day.

▶️Here's when you can catch the Changing of the King's Life Guard ceremony:
• Changing of The King's Life Guard: 11:00 am (Monday - Friday)
• The Duty Officer's Inspection: 1100 on Saturdays and 1000 on Sundays
• Mounted sentries guard the entrance to Horse Guards on Whitehall: 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. These are changed every hour.
• Dismounted inspection of the guard: 4:00 pm daily
