I was on my way to this scheduled tow this morning when I got a call for a grounded Pursuit that was in the area (last weeks video), so this is the continuation from that day of the scheduled tow.
It was a little tight getting the boat out of its slip, and the way the pilings were arranged, I wasn’t able to get tied up all that great, but I managed to get it out of the slip without too much trouble. There’s the ideal way to get set up on a hip tow, and then there’s the practical way, and it’s great when they line up, but part of this job is knowing what’s good enough and being able to adapt when things aren’t perfect. The tow itself up to Snead Island Boat Works was uneventful, other than the camera had some issues and some footage on the way up was lost…but the important footage at the beginning and end of the tow, where all the action occurs, was saved for once! 😁
As always, getting into Snead Island is a bit tricky with that narrow entrance and then needing to get the boat slowed down enough to put them back on the hip before we crash into a dock or another boat…but thankfully this time my boss wasn’t there to watch 😶😂

What was supposed to be a straightforward scheduled tow turned into a two-for-one adventure before the coffee even kicked in. On my way to the job, I got a call about a grounded Pursuit—the same stubborn boat from last week’s video—so I had to swing by and check that off the list first. Once that mini-mission was handled, it was time to tackle the day’s real challenge: getting a large boat out of one of the tightest slips I’ve ever worked in.
The pilings at this dock were arranged like a nautical game of pick-up sticks, leaving me almost no room to maneuver or tie up the way I’d like. There’s the ideal textbook setup for a hip tow…and then there’s reality. Today was a masterclass in the latter. If you’ve ever wondered how tow captains adapt when conditions aren’t perfect, this is it—finding that sweet spot of “good enough” without sacrificing safety or control.
The actual tow up to Snead Island Boat Works was blissfully uneventful, at least on the water. My camera, on the other hand, decided to throw a fit and lost some of the cruising footage. Thankfully the key action—launching from the slip and docking at the end—was captured, so you still get all the fun parts without the long intermission.
Snead Island never makes life easy: narrow entrance, strong currents, and the delicate dance of slowing down enough to re-hip the boat before you end up kissing a dock or another hull. It’s always a little nerve-wracking, but this time I had one small comfort—my boss wasn’t there to critique every throttle move. 😶😂
If you like behind-the-scenes looks at real tow work, tips for adapting when the “perfect” setup isn’t possible, or just want to watch a captain try to keep his cool in tight quarters, this one’s for you. Grab a coffee, settle in, and enjoy the ride from chaos to calm—camera glitches and all.
