Carney triggers federal election for April 28, asks Canadians for “strong, positive mandate” | FULL

Liberal Leader Mark Carney announced Sunday that he has asked Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament and call an election for April 28. Simon accepted, and Carney is now asking Canadians for a “strong, positive mandate.”

"We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty. Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada," Carney said, referencing Canada's burgeoning trade war with the U.S.

Carney added, "Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen."

Asked about immigration levels, Carney said that there was post-pandemic boom and that Canada has "not lived up to the bargain with those people. There's not adequate housing. Not everyone who came here for an education was getting an education that they would expect."

The Liberal Leader said caps to immigration were put in place as a consequence and those will "remain in place until we've expanded housing."
