By now, you may know that I'm fascinated with Small Town America and Abraham Lincoln. I've spent much of my life "Looking for Lincoln" ... which is why I traveled through small town Macomb, Illinois where Lincoln stayed overnight on at least three occasions in late 1858 during the famous Lincoln-Douglas Debate tour. Macomb was also where a famous photo was taken of Lincoln on October 26, 1858. But, what I didn't know was that Macomb is also the birthplace of the board game Monopoly, one of the most famous and iconic board games in the world. It was invented by Lizzie Magie, who was born in Macomb...or at least the concept of Monopoly was invented by Lizzie. Her new board game that she called the "Landlord's Game" debuted in 1903. Somewhere along the way, the name of the game was changed to Monopoly and sold to Parker Brothers who turned it into a multi-million dollar enterprise. Here in is the story of Lizzie Magie and Monopoly! Oh...and wait till you see the town square and the beautiful McDonough County Courthouse! Join me, the History Mystery Man, for another small town adventure in Macombopoly! Thanks for your support!
