In 1944, the men of the 105th Infantry thought Captain Benjamin Salomon was just a dentist—someone meant to clean teeth, not fight wars. But at 5:47 AM on July 7th, the largest banzai charge of the Pacific War crashed into his aid station, ripping straight through the American line.
Medical officers weren’t supposed to fire weapons. Dentists weren’t supposed to be anywhere near combat. Salomon didn’t care.
When Japanese soldiers bayoneted their way into his tent, he fought them hand-to-hand, then dragged a 93-pound M1917 machine gun outside and held off thousands alone.
By the time the battle ended, ninety-eight enemy soldiers lay dead in front of his gun. The Army had tried to keep him out of combat—he became one of the deadliest one-man defenders of the war.
This is how a Beverly Hills dentist became a legend on Saipan.
