Why didn’t income taxes exist until the 1799—even though governments have always wanted revenue?
In this video, I break down the surprising reason: for most of history, income wasn’t measurable. I walk through the five systems that had to be invented before income taxes became possible—industrial wages, modern accounting, standardized currency, mass literacy, and population records. Once those fell into place, the world’s most important tax was finally born.
I also look at why ancient taxes in Egypt and Rome weren’t real income taxes, and explore how future tech like neural interfaces or emotion-tracking could create entirely new kinds of taxes we can’t even imagine today.
If you're into public policy, economics, or just understanding how governments actually work, you’ll get a lot out of this one.
